Brief History of Vellore
Vellore has a very interesting history. Stone
inscriptions in the fort indicate that it might have
been built during the rule of Chinna Bommi Nayak
(1526-1595AD). So Vellore actually goes back a few
hundred years singe it was born.
Since the construction of the Vellore Fort, there
have been many kings and dynasties that have been
here, mainly because of the fort, such as the Pallavas,
the Cholas of Uraiyur, the Rashtrakutas of Malkhad,
Samboovarayar, the Vijayanagar Empire, the Nawabs of
Carnatic, and the Britishers.
Vellore was also the place where some decisive
battles were fought, mainly between the French and
British for colonial supremacy.
Vellore is also famous for the first uprising
against British Colonization, the Sepoy Mutiny of
1806. This was considered the prelude to the uprising
in 1857, that finally led to India getting back
freedom from the Britishers.
Dr. Ida S. Scudder, the American lady who came as a
missionary to Vellore started her medical work in
1900AD, the result of which is the Christian Medical
College & Hospital of today, one of the worlds premier
Medical colleges and one of the biggest and most
technologically advanced hospitals in the continent.
In fact some of the procedures done in CMC are done in
very few other places around the world.
